Overview
The Weight of Attention is an essay of about 2,470 words in eight sections. It argues that attention is better understood as weighing than as spending: it is how the world acquires weight for a person.
Challenge
Attention is usually described as money that gets spent or stolen. The essay needed a better model, it had to survive the strongest objection to it, and it had to stay readable for a general audience.
Solution
It moves through a question, a disturbance, the argument, a paradox with the strongest objection answered, six human scenes, a reversal and a resolution. Research sits underneath in 15 sourced notes, a context layer and 22 references.
