Overview
Over, Under is an interactive exhibition about woven images. Its thesis is that in cloth the picture is the structure: every crossing of warp and weft is both a pixel and a bond. Ten stations make the case.
Challenge
The subject is visual, but a gallery of cloth photographs would only show it, not prove it. The visitor needed to change the structure and watch the picture change with it.
Solution
Every image is computed in the browser from weaving drafts by a hand-written WebGL2 renderer. Nothing is photographed. Visitors edit a draft, flip a crossing, weave their own word as damask and watch a cut cloth fall onto the table. The research is logged claim by claim and labelled as sourced, calculated or illustrative.
Process
- 01
Research
Checked every historical and technical claim against a source before it went into the copy.
- 02
Engine
Wrote the weave maths and a WebGL2 cloth renderer, with a flat renderer for browsers without it.
- 03
Stations
Built ten stations, each with one job, from a single crossing to damask.
- 04
QA
Tested in Chromium and WebKit at seven viewports, with reduced motion and WebGL switched off.

The live build
One self-contained HTML file that runs in the browser, offline, with nothing to install.
Tools used
- HTML & CSS
- JavaScript
- WebGL2
- Python
- Playwright
Outcomes
- 173 of 173 automated checks passed in Chromium and WebKit.
- Every image computed live from drafts, with a working fallback when WebGL2 is missing.
- Frame timing measured at two pixel densities and published with the project.
This is a self-initiated concept. The outcomes describe what was made and measured, not results for a client.
