Overview
Bracket Quarterly is a complete issue of a journal that does not exist, about structure in buildings, books and sentences. It has twenty pages and a five-spread system section, all designed and written in full.
Challenge
A made-up magazine is easy to fake with filler. This issue had to read as real editorial work, with a feature worth reading, one consistent grid and files a printer could use.
Solution
The feature is about the Song-dynasty module that sized every timber in a hall from one cross-section, and the journal is built on that module: every page is a cai, 10 by 15. It ships three ways: a digital edition you turn by hand, a reader PDF, and a press PDF with bleed and crop marks.
Process
- 01
Editorial
Wrote the issue's pieces and planned the running order.
- 02
Grid
Derived the page and every measurement from the timber module.
- 03
Edition
Built the digital edition as one HTML file with fonts and drawings embedded.
- 04
Production
Output a reader PDF and a press PDF with bleed and crop marks.

Outcomes
- Twenty pages plus a five-spread system section.

- A digital edition that works offline from a single file.
This is a self-initiated concept. The outcomes describe what was made and measured, not results for a client.
