A field of fine grain. The words BETWEEN FRAMES are made only by motion: inside the letters the grain runs one way, outside them the other.

No. 10 · Between Frames

A word you can only see while it moves.

Every frame on this screen is noise: an even scatter of grain with nothing drawn in it. The words are made of motion alone. Inside the letters the grain runs one way and outside them the other, and your eye binds together whatever moves together. Psychologists call it common fate.

So pause it and the words go, because no single frame ever held them. Save a frame and look. Then press Mark the word and watch where they were.

Coherence is how much of the grain keeps to the rule. Turn it down and the words hold on longer than you would expect, then slip under. Write your own word and it is made the same way, decoded from its edges in.
